When you squeeze a tube of toothpaste, what comes out? BBQ sauce? No, although that would be a tasty way to start your day! Toothpaste comes out because toothpaste was put in. Well the same is true in our lives. When we are squeezed by life’s trials, what comes out? Whatever we put in. The old saying Garbage in, Garbage out. If you put garbage in your heart, whether that is in the form of music, images, speech, conduct, than when you are squeezed by trials or temptations in your life, that is what will come out.
“Then the Lord said to him, “You pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are still filthy, full of greed and wickedness!”” Luke 11:39. Our hearts are the wellspring of life. What we fill our hearts with is what comes out when the bricks hit the fan. We need to be sure not to be hypocrites in our lives. We can’t just clean up the outside of our lives, so people look at us on a Sunday morning and think, what a great person he/she is. They go to church and say all the right things but what does their life look like on a Tuesday? We need to clean both the inside and the outside.
When you stub your toe on the ground or hit your head on the car getting in, what comes out? @#$%!#? Well whatever comes out has been whatever you have been feeding your heart. You see it all comes from the heart, the most vital organ in our bodies. “You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good words from a good heart, and and evil person produces evil words from an evil heart” Matthew 13:34-35. This principle has been taught to most, if not all of us from an early age, we just never realized it. How many of us had teachers or mothers that said, “If you eat junk food then you will feel like junk”? Garbage in, Garbage out.
James 1:2-4 tells us “Whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested your endurance has a chance to grow.” Let it be an opportunity for God things to come out of our hearts, not garbage. God in, God out. Put noble things in your hearts and minds. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.” Philippians 4:8
Let today be your garbage day. Take whatever garbage you are harboring deep inside your hearts and set it out on the curb. Let God take that garbage from you and then feed your hearts and minds pure things. “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassion never fails. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23. This way when the trials of life squeeze you, you know what will come out. A life holy and honorable before God. What are you waiting for?
